Help With Keepsake Baby Book

Helen asks…

What unnecessary things did you cry or get really upset about around the time of your baby’s birth?

A few hours after we left the hospital (following my c section), I realized that in all the excitement of me leaving the hospital after 5 long days, I’d forgotten to ask for the little belly button clip thingy when they took it off. I really wanted it for my daughter’s baby book as a keepsake. I started crying and my mother and sister thought I was being silly.

The days and weeks surrounding the birth of your baby are emotional times for most of us. What unnecessary things did you cry or get really upset about around the time of your baby‘s birth? Something that in the grand scheme of things was not at all important but at that moment was just devastating to you?

Build a Baby Book Staff Replied:

Usually the emotions hit you the hardest right after the baby is born. I just got out of the hospital on saterday my baby is 1 weeks old. They took him to the nursery for 2 hours and i cried and cried and cried because i wanted him back in my room! So, i called the nurse and told her to bring him back. Another 30 minutes went by and i started getting really upset! I had just had a c-section so my mom saw how upset i was getting and went out to the nurse’s station and told them i was crying uncontrolably and to bring the baby NOW!!!! It was pretty funny afterwards to think about how bad i missed him! Lol.

Daniel asks…

Keepsake letter to my unborn daughter…..?

I’d like to write a keepsake type of letter to my unborn daughter who is due in two weeks. I’m just looking for some ideas to include in the letter. I’m going to put the letter in her baby book. What do you think are some ideas to include in the letter? Did you write a letter to your unborn?

Build a Baby Book Staff Replied:

I like the idea, never done it myself. I know its not a letter, but you could include news paper articles, magazines, and just anything with a date on it.
As far as what to put in the letter, put what you are feeling. Like, when you are writing the letter, you rub your tummy, or how you talked to her when she was in your belly. What you are wearing. What the weather is like outside.
If you can, make a video diary, take a video camera and record as many family members as you can. Also, record around the house, her room, any toys and clothes she has, the car, just everything and anything you probably take for granted. Keep in mind, you are creating a detailed account of what is going on around you and what you are feeling. She don’t know that nor will understand that until she is old enough, but it will give her an idea of what you were dealing with.
If you are stuck on ideas, you can do a day to day diary type thing until you give birth to her. Then you will be too busy to take notes.
I wish I had something like this to look back on. I like the idea. Thank you.

Lizzie asks…

What would you do differently next time?

We are trying to conceive baby number 2 and I was wondering what you mummy’s would do differently next time you were pregnant

I would

1.not worry as much about things and try to be more relaxed
2. take photos of my bump
3. make sure that I took lots and lots of photos of my newborn
4. buy one of those pregnany and baby keepsake books (I really wish I had done this last time)
5. Not fuss so much about ironing every little outfit that my new baby was going to have on before she was even born

Mummies…what about you?

Build a Baby Book Staff Replied:

I would:
Take more photos of my bump (only have like 3)
Relax a bit more
Be less paranoid and worried about every little thing.
Pray that I dont have to have another c-section so I can REALLY enjoy the first few hours/days with my baby.

Best of luck with TTC

Help With Baby Photo Books Online

Helen asks…

personal scrapbook business, good or bad idea?

online of course, we want to get the photos posted or emailed to us. title and imformation of the event, such as wdding birthdays, vacation/holidays. days out, religious ceromonys, baby books and other stuff.
we will charge £30 for 1 book and £45 for 2.
the sizes are limited but im not sure what book company we will be using. but all prices are the same.
before we set out on this ‘challenge’ we wanted to know if this is a good or bad idea. and any suggesions would be welcome.

Build a Baby Book Staff Replied:

Yes there are people that like custom albums or what I call pre-made pages. I sell a lot of layouts on ebay. They range anywhere from $20 up. The more detail the more money you can get. Alot of people are interested into the tear bears or vintage layouts. A few layouts sell for over $100 and I have seen them over $200 before too. I myself refuse to buy a pre-made layout for over $39.99. I have also purchased pre-made or custom albums. Most people offer them in a 10 pages (5 layouts) or 20 pages (10 layouts) form. But you don’t have to just take my word for it. Go to ebay.com and search pre-made scrapbook layouts or paperpiecings and you will see for your self. I love creating my own layouts and I usually just make 2 and keep one and sell one on ebay.

Besides ebay you could maybe advertise by joining meetups or yahoo groups or make your own webpage but that takes a lot of maintenance and sometimes money. I have passed out business cards at scrapbook stores and I have also hosted a technique class out of my home and posted flyers in the scrapbooking stores. That was fun.

You can offer different size books too. Offer 12×12, 8 1/2 x 11, 8×8 and 6×6 because different people like different things. I think peple would be interested in your service mostly for gifts for other people or people that don’t have the time to scrap themselves because it is so fun and fullfilling to do it yourself. Good luck in your venture.

How would you deal with this and do you feel she is an unfit Mum?

Mother sparks row after posting photos of ‘smoking’ baby on Face-book
by Jennifer Laville Jan 20th 2010

Categories: Weird stories

A teenage mum has been investigated by social services after she posted a picture of her six-month-old son with an unlit cigarette in his mouth on the social networking site Face-book.

Rebecca Davey, 18, was reported to the police by concerned friends who saw the picture of her son, Ollie, on her page.

Essex police visited the family home in Southend, but said there were ‘no immediate concerns and the matter was referred to social services’.

After the visit from the authorities, Rebecca changed her Face-book status to read: ‘Some w***** reported me to the police abwt picture off ollie.’

She went on to write, ‘Why Would SomeOne Do That To Me U Ollie No was taking U Yur Mine for lyfee Darlinggg Mummy Loves You :)

Online friends were quick to offer their support after the picture appeared in the national press. One post on Rebecca’s site read, ‘Some ppl r nosey f****** aint they!! dw [don't worry] ur a good mum they wont hassle u 4 long!!!’

Head of specialist children’s services, Sue Cook, said: ‘Police officers visited the family home on Saturday and, although no evidence of criminal wrongdoing emerged, words of advice were given to the parent.’

Social services also visited Ms Davey’s home on Saturday and made a second visit on Tuesday.

Ms Cook explained ‘The purpose of the visit is to carry out an assessment aimed at ensuring that any child within the household is being appropriately cared for.’

The startling image of little Ollie with his mouth clamped firmly round a cigarette, has sparked fierce debate.

Whilst many argue that the outcry is an over-reaction, there are others who think it’s indicative of a modern culture of poor parenting

Was this just a tasteless joke blown out of proportion, or should we be concerned for the child’s welfare?

This kind of women simply adds ammo to those that are against young single mums and can you blame people for being angry over this.

It is clear to me she is an unfit mum no mum in their right mind would do such a thing.

It is very offensive… That she would even let the child look at a cigarette… She should be ashamed of herslef… But to have this kind of treatment was a little to far… And if you ask me the picture looks as though the cig had been photoshopped in… It looks fake… Im not defending her however if she is dumb enough to post such a vile picture online she is smart enough to deal with the problem it is going to cause… She needs to learn when things are appropreiate and not… This was far beyond apprpreiate… She should have to take partenting classes to learn whats it right and not right… Smokin is bad and should not be instilled in a childs mind at that age the little boy is going to think it is ok to smoke because it didn’t hurt him to have the stick in his mouth… She needs to mture a little… But i do still think that the picture looks fake…

Linda asks…

CS4 Help Please- Blur & Darkening?

I’m a photoshop beginner, and have CS4. There are so many books and online tutorials, with different ways of doing everything it’s overwhelming. I want to be a professional photographer someday, so would like to know the most accurate ways, not the cutting corner ways, for editing. Right now I would like to know the right way for blurring so I can add depth to field. Also, I haven’t got reflectors yet and made the mistake of shooting during a day with direct sunlight, I know you can darken certain areas of photos somehow, so I’m hoping on some of these images to use that so there doesn’t appear to be shadows all over her face. Her is one of the pictures I’m hoping to use spot darkening on- http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b334/TrEys_BaBy/shelby647ed1.jpg
I want to know if this can be done. Thanks!
I do know that the most accurate way to add depth is through the actual lens, as I have done so with many pictures but would like more of a dramatic look.

Build a Baby Book Staff Replied:

1st off – “the most accurate ways” of getting depth of field is through REAL lens with a low f-stop…NOT Photoshop.

2nd – to lighten shadows or “less bright” areas, just ‘Layer Via Copy’ and brighten the shadows, and then erase the parts of the photo that don’t need it.

A more dramatic look can be achieved with a lens like the 50mm f/1.8 or f/1.4

Fact’s and Events book for Baby’s 1st Birthday…?

I am looking for a book that contains all the facts/events which happened in the world the year my baby was born. Or maybe it was all the facts and events that happened the day my baby was born. I remember seeing it as a gift at a childs first bday party and thought it was a really great idea for a childs keepsake! Any help would be great!

My mum wrote me a letter when i was born about my stats, her feelings and what was going on in the world also as she was only 18 her fav music and things like that, that she gave me on my 21st birthday it was quite funny and very meaningful i loved it! A belly cast is also fun, you can get everyone to sign and decorate it at your baby shower!

Sandy asks…

Baby foot and handprints at home?

I am about to have my little girl, and I have a few different keepsake books that I can put her prints in them. Instead of taking ALL of them to the hospital I was just gonna do them at home. Does anyone know of any baby ink kits you can buy and use at home? Where can I buy it?

Build a Baby Book Staff Replied:

Just buy some non toxic kids paints from a craft shop, thats what I did.

I did as many hand and foot prints as I could in one go, so I could choose the best ones when they dried!

Help With Digital Baby Book

Susan asks…

I got my BFP this morning then got my BFN this afternoon?

We’ve been trying for 18 months and just on a whim because of backpain and sore boobs I told my hubby to pick me up a test, tested at 2am this morning and was shocked it was positive! Drank a ton of water and watched TV until 5am and tested again BFP then this afternoon i waited for 3 hours and took another test for the baby book and it was negative. The 2 positives were digital test and the negative was a normal stick, i’m worried now and can’t have a blood test until monday. anyone ever gotten a false positive?
Update, I took my digital test this morning, however it was negative…at this point i’m stumped. It was an EPT digital test but I was sipping on a glass of water through out the night due to scratchy throat so not sure if that had anything to do with it. I’m back to square one again waiting until monday. One TMI gross update is that I feel like in a faucet leaking this thick white lotiony mess since this morning, and it’s not stopping. Gross I know but has anyone experienced this?

Build a Baby Book Staff Replied:

Congratulations!!!!!!
It is very rare to get a false positive!
It is always best to take pregnancy tests with first morning urine, so the third one was after all that water was in your system and diluted the hormones needed to make the test positive. I don’t know what kind of test the third one was, but I found that the Equate brand test from Walmart is very inaccurate. I knew for a fact that I was pregnant and took 2 tests from that brand out of 2 different boxes and both came out with invalid results. I found the digital ones and the Answer brand from Walmart worked the best.
Good luck!

John asks…

I packed my hospital bag, did I miss anything?

light socks & heavy socks, 4 maternity underwears, loose fitting outfit to come home in, 2 comfy t-shirts & a comfy, nightgown dress (for after im cleaned up), massager for my back, pads, breast pads, nursing bra, my nursing pillow, 2 books to pass time, deoderant, soap, toothbrushes, lufah, hairbrush, hairproducts and makeup fot next day pics, shampoo & conditioner, slippers, robe, clothes for daddy, lip balm, digital camera & extra batteries, digital video camcorder, hair ties, comfy shorts, comfy pj pants in case its cold in hospital, a nursing shirt, a small notebook & pen to write down what time he comes out. and other notes. and my pregnancy/baby book to get his footprints on the page.

and in baby‘s bag I packed:
3 diapers, some wipes, hand sanitizer, a few onsies, a couple newborn side snap shirts, his comming home outfit, some booties, a couple caps, mits, recieving blankets, travel size pack. with baby lotion, powder, diaper rash cream, ect., ect. his health kit.
anything else that would be helpful?? or somthing i should know? thanks!

Build a Baby Book Staff Replied:

1) Some movies if the hospital has a player – VHS or DVD.

2) Keep EVERYTHING THE SAME and use fragrant-free body soap – babies like consistency. You need to use everything the same for the first few weeks.

3) You’ve actually packed too much in the baby’s bag – it’ll be useful later, but you’ll get all of that at the hosital. They’ll give you a nice little cheap diaper bag fill with that, and the hospital usually takes care of everything while the baby is in the hospital.

4) I may have missed it, but snacks for after the bith.

5) You won’t need nursing pads yet.

6) Get super mongo pads – you’ll need it.

7) Call the hospital first – do they have nursing pillows? The less you have to bring, the less gets infected.
8) Take only the min. Of makeup – remember your hormones are going to be crazy. You’ll be hot and sweaty one moment and chilled the next.

Paul asks…

What are you packing in your hospital bag?

There are so many “lists” online, and most seem rather excessive or outdated (camera/film- calling card… really? How about digital camera, and cell phone with your contacts list already in it?) Here is my list. anything you can think of that I may need? I am trying to pack as light as possible! By the way, i live in a small town and my hospital is literally less than 10 minutes away. My hubby can go home to shower, change and come back. He did it last time!

My List:
* Bodywash, Lotion, Spray set from VS- makes me feel “pretty” after all that mess! lol
* Small pouf for washing.
* Shampoo/ conditioner samples (plenty for 2 uses and I don’t have to lug the big bottles)
* Small Hairbrush, scrunchie.. not sure if I should bother with a hairdryer or curling iron?
* travel toothbrush/toothpaste and deoderant
* nintendo DS (yes for ME, not my hubby!! I have card games and sudoku on it as well as other games)
* Digital camera with blank memory card and extra batteries
* Cell phone (mine and hubby will have his)
* Robe, Slippers, socks, 2 sets of PJ’s (to wear for visitors- I am very petite and the gowns are HUGE on me!)
* Nursing tank and bra. 2 pair of undies (I’ll wear the mesh thingies.. no sense in messing my own til I have too!)
* Facewash and light makeup (concealer, powder, eyeliner, mascara, lipgloss and simple color to keep from looking ghostly)
* disposeable nursing pads
* outfit to go home in.

Baby bag has 2 outfits, 2 recieving blankets, 2 burpcloths, 1 pacifier, baby book, socks, slippers, hat, anti-scratch mittens, nursing cover.
I also have the carseat ready for the car. Should I pack my electric breastpump and storage bags? I plan to nurse.. but I’m not sure if I need these things right away?

Anything else? I don’t think I’ll need candy, and whatever food I want, hubby will run out and get afterwards and the hospital has food avaliable for room service 24/7. Also the hospital will give me as many pillows as I want/need and will give me sleeping meds for that night if needed.

Thanks everyone!
Oh, and the usual insurance stuff, lipbalm, anti-bac, etc. is usually in my purse- and I will obviously have that with me! lol

Yours sounds great. Your due the same day as me, but Im having my c section on the 14th..Time is getting so close, I havent even started my bag but I did buy those trial sizes of shampoo and conditioner so I wouldnt have to lug my big bottles. But your list sounds pretty complete..

Do they make baby books for single moms?

I am 30 weeks and looking at the variety of baby books at my local book stores…and I’ve noticed a distinct theme.

That theme being: “us” and “we”….mom and dad stuff.

While I have a good sized extended family who are all thrilled at the thought of my unborn child, the father of said child is not one of them.

He will not be involved in her life at all, and for me that includes her baby book!

So…do they make baby books that are more for one parent households? I’ve been tempted to just rip out the pages that say things like “dad’s family tree” and all that but I’d rather not rip up a book.

Build a Baby Book Staff Replied:

Lol, you could maybe find something on Amazon.com or site similar, but I don’t think they’re readily available on hand at local bookstores.

Write your own book!! I’m sure there’s a lot of single moms who would like a little humour aside the grummy parts in what to expect of single parenthood. :)

I want to make a book of my photos of my daughters modeling portfolio?

A few books. Just for her modeling and memories.

One for her memories.
One to publish her Baby Book, with pics and notes and baby registries and bracelts and all!

One for her natural beauty pageant pics. Head Shots, Stage, Pics of her wins.
One for her glitz beauty pageant pics. Same as above!

One of her modeling portfolio.

One for her acting portfolio.

One for her etc album/
